Women in the liquor industry are few and far between. The booze business has always been dominated by men. But that didn't stop 29-year-old Jassil Villanueva Quintana from becoming the youngest Master of Rum in the industry.
In 2015, Quintana was listed as the youngest rum master in the world, according to the World Record Academy. She is young, but she knows much about rum and is successful at a young age because she did everything right. First, she earned an undergraduate degree in business administration from Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra, in Santiago de los Caballeros. While working on her degree, she accepted an internship at Brugal Rum.

Extensive education and training

Before she went back to earn her M.B.A, Quintana also attended the English Language Institute at Florida International University. It was only after she completed her extensive education that she felt ready to start training as a Master of Rum. Even though Quintana's family owns Brugal Rum, she had to fully prepare herself for the role of a rum master.

What does a rum master do?

Quintana spends most of her time in the warehouse tasting up to 20 different samples of rum a day. With her expertise, she is checking the rums for consistency in color, smell and taste. She also oversees after-hours tasting. Needless to say, she puts many hours into any given day. But then, she is the only woman Rum Master in the world.
