Beth Mowins is a play-by-play announcer and sports journalist for ESPN and CBS. Although she typically calls women's college sports, she will be the first woman ever to call a play-by-play in the NFL's Monday Night Football. She is also only the second female play-by-play announcer in NFL regular season history. In 1987, Gayle Sierens provided commentary for a Seahawks-Chiefs Sunday match for NBC Sports.
Opening doors to women in sports
Women know sports, so it makes sense they have the opportunity to do the commentaries. “Every woman I know in this business worked hard so we can talk about sports, not talk about us talking about sports,” Mowins said. She knows sports all right. She played basketball, softball and soccer in high school, varsity basketball in college, then started her career in 1991 as news and sports director for WXHC-FM Radio in Homer, New York. Mowins is one of the 2009 inductees into the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame.
Face of sports is changing
Mowins is excited but also anxious, knowing that her debut will be in the spotlight. But she also hopes her new position will "inspire more women to go into sports broadcasting."
