Where you start your business is just as important as when. In fact, after often years of planning, the location you choose can either make or break you. A new study found these 10 states to be the best places for women entrepreneurs to start a business.

Top 10 best states for women to start a business

The study was done by Fundera, an online marketplace that connects small business owners searching for credit with the best lender for their business. All fifty states, including District of Columbia, were ranked by factors that included the number of businesses owned by women and the state's economic health.

#1 North Dakota - Ranks second in five-year growth in average revenue of women-owned businesses (119.4 percent)
#2 South Dakota - Third in five-year growth in average revenue of women-owned businesses (95.4 percent)
#3 Hawaii - Third in overall unemployment rate (2.9 percent)
#4 Minnesota - Sixth in percent of women with bachelor's degree or higher (22.7 percent)
#5 Virginia - Eighth in percent of women with bachelor's degree or higher (21.1 percent)
#6 Maryland - Third in percent of total businesses owned by women (40.1 percent)
#7 Maine - First in average revenue of women-owned businesses ($233,434)
#8 Iowa - Fourth in five-year growth in average revenue of women-owned businesses (61 percent)
#9 Colorado - First in percent of women with bachelor's degree or higher (23.9 percent)
#10 Montana - Second in percent of women-owned businesses with paid employees; second in number of businesses per 100 people (11.1)

North Dakota and South Dakota were the two top states providing the best climate for running a business. These two states have among the highest five-year growth in average revenue of women-owned businesses in the country.
