Imagine a group of teenage girls, age 15-18, getting together to solve some of the world's toughest problems. These girls are interested in finding solutions to food waste, sexual assault on campuses, and Parkinson's disease. Who are they? They are girls who are competing in the #BuiltByGirls Challenge, organized by Built By Girls Ventures, an AOL venture capital fund.
The #BuiltByGirls Challenge
Every year, the BuiltByGirls Challenge offers girls age 15-18 an opportunity to create an innovative product that has the potential for being a new startup, or an idea that could lead to a significant change in education of girls. Applicants may submit a tech project idea or product in one of the following categories: Mobile apps, Games, Physical computer, Robotics, Research, Other.
Girls, in teams of up to 4, have until the middle of August to submit their ideas via video for a chance to be selected among the finalist teams who will be invited to San Francisco where the winning team, as a whole, will receive $10,000 in funding, and the opportunity to have a booth at TechCrunch Disrupt’s Startup Alley.
All are winners!
All the girls who participate are winners because they have received valuable experience in using science and technology to become entrepreneurs in creating solutions to problems. The annual competition is also a reminder to all young girls that they, too, can change the current underrepresentation of women in the tech industry.
