Research Shows That Women Are Earning More Than Men in These Career Fields, But....

Researchers from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York made a discovery recently regarding salaries between men and women in certain job fields. There is actually a "reverse wage gap" between the two groups in 29 career fields. Women traditionally earn about 78 cents for every dollar a man earns, but in these fields, women are actually earning more than men.

Not a reason to celebrate, though, long term

The research showed that women who recently graduated from college are earning more than their male counterparts in the fields of social services, industrial engineering, construction and business analytics, art history, physical therapy, and in all other engineering areas. But, don't celebrate yet. The higher wages appear only at the beginning of their careers. By the time these women are 35-45 years old, men are out earning them again.

Why?

Although it isn't clear just why this happens, the report indicated that some causes may be linked to discrimination, and interrupting careers to start a family. Pamela Stone, a sociology professor at Hunter College, calls it “The motherhood penalty." While recruiters are eager to hire women and other minorities in these career areas right out of college, career women are on their own with promotions and career advancement, and biases can enter the picture again.
