National Science Foundation Offers Grants to Women-Owned Small Businesses

National Science Foundation
Most small business grants do not come from the federal government. One exception is the National Science Foundation. In order to remain competitive in technology and science research and development, The National Science Foundation supports the work of small business in these areas through Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer (SBIR/STTR) grants.

SBIR/STTR grants are offered to women-owned small businesses, as well as persons who are socially and economically disadvantaged. The program is designed to encourage more people from these groups to get involved in research and development projects supported by Federal program grants.

Projects supported are those that involve science and engineering initiatives with high potential for commercialization and economic payoff. They can be in the areas of biotechnology, chemical technology, information/communication technology, advanced materials, manufacturing or education.

The program combines the efforts of small businesses and non-profit research organizations working together to create a more significant impact on programs and achieve greater results.
