The award program was established by Eleanor Roosevelt in 1989 and mainly focuses on education. Education can include classroom teaching, educational and research contributions, and legal and legislative work that promotes equity for women and girls. Recipients do not need to be educators in order to be eligible for an award.
The deadline is usually in November each year, and the fund award is usually $5,000. Past recipients have included college professors, founders of non-profit development resources for women leaders, financial education organizations, publishers, economists, and others.
The award is issued through The American Association of University Women (AAUW), a non-profit organization that works to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. AAUW has been empowering women as individuals and as a community since 1881.
