The Shirley Holden Helberg Grants for Mature Women

National League of American Pen WomenThe Shirley Holden Helberg Grants for Mature Women is available for women 35 and older whose profession is in the arts and music. The grant of $1,000 is awarded to help creative women pursue further education which will help them pursue their career goal.

Applications for grant money are in three categories: art, writing and music. The art category requires submission of original oil, acrylic or watercolor paintings, or photography. Writings may consist of articles, short stories or the first chapter of a non-fiction book. Music scores are submitted when applying for a music grant.

Applications may be submitted for more than one category. Each applicant should include their background, why they are requesting the grant, and what the grant will be used for. Grant money must be used for purposes relating to career goals in the arts and music.

The grants are sponsored by the National League of American Pen Women. The non-profit organization was formed in 1897 and is located in Washington, D.C. The organization has 55,000 professional women artists, writers and musicians as members located around the country. The professional organization, of which Eleanor Roosevelt was a member during her days at the White House, supports the work of artistic professional women with grants, scholarships, writing competitions, art exhibitions and other events.
