The Women's Community Clinic in San Francisco received a $25,000 grant from the Aetna Foundation that will help them provide health education and prenatal care to low-income African-American women and girls. With the grant money, the organization is able to extend their services to uninsured and underinsured San Francisco residents. The Aetna Foundation is the non-profit extension of Aetna Inc. The organization gives grants to companies and projects that improve health and health care in the areas of obesity, racial and ethnic health care equity, and integrated health care services. Their mission with grant giving is to increase everyone's chance of receiving high-quality health care.
Regional grants range from $25,000 to $50,000 for projects that impact communities in a 16-state geographic area. National grants range from $50,000 to $150,000; currently, these grants are for non-profit organizations, but the foundation plans to extend grant requests to other organizations.
Aetna and the Aetna Foundation have contributed $412 million in grants and other financial support since 1980. Aetna, Inc. was established in 1850 as a provider of insurance. In 1999, the company purchased Prudential HealthCare and is now the country’s largest provider of health benefits. In 2006, Aetna announced a commitment of $50 million to support minority- and women-owned businesses over four years to provide support to this growing market segment.
