Back in the day, women thought they had to act like a man, dress like a man, and think like a man to succeed in the workplace. Now, women are saying, “Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman.” Women of color especially have learned these 10 valuable lessons about how to succeed in the workplace.
ColorComm, an organization that helps women of color thrive in the field of communications, has an annual conference which educates women of color on issues they face in the workplace every day. The conference features speakers such as Michelle Ebanks, President of Essence Communications, motivational speaker Lisa Nichols, and President of Huffington Post, Adrianna Huffington.
The lessons are simple, and they come from women for women. They empower women and teach them how to succeed not only in their careers but in life.
#1 Lead a positive life - "Live life like everything is going in your favor."
#2 Recognize your self worth - "Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman."
#3 Be your own leader - "We (women) don't have time to be submissive."
#4 Demand what you deserve - "If you don't get what you want in salary, you must be willing to walk out."
#5 Achieve your full potential - "Your gifts are right in front of you. Get up and grab them."
#6 Be yourself - "Reinvent your passion by understanding what's missing. Make a unique voice."
#7 Support other women - "We've got to be more comfortable giving to each other and pouring into each other."
#8 Know the power of your actions - "No matter what you say, what you do overrules it."
#9 Be driven by purpose - "Transitions and obstacles are the blessings, so expect them. Be driven by service, impact and purpose."
#10 Always believe in yourself - "Believe that anything is possible for you and always be yourself. Don't adapt to what you think others want to succeed."
