If you have ever purchased a Spanx product -- leggings, tights, body shapers -- you should know the answer to this one. Her name is Sara Blakely, and she is not only the Founder of Spanx, but the youngest self-made female billionaire in history.

Sara's story

She wasn't born into wealth and privilege, but Sara had something that would make her special and a success at being an entrepreneur. She had a fierce passion to help women by re-inventing the girdle, and she wasn't going to let anyone stop her. She also had a healthy view of failure, which she learned from her father. Here are a few very wise words of advice from one who learned, and learned very well.

  • Don't be afraid to fail: Sara's father taught her the power of failing big. What does this mean? One learns from failures. As Sara explains it, failure is "stretching yourself far enough out of your comfort zone and attempting to be more than you were the day before." If you don't stretch, you don't fail, and you don't learn.
  • Have a vision: Sara visioned herself on the Oprah Winfrey show about 15 years before she actually became a success. The point is, she had a very clear vision of where she wanted to go and who she wanted to become.
  • Don't take NO for an answer: Successful people keep trying and don't take no for an answer. When obstacles appear, they find a way around them or through them. But they find a way, no matter what people keep telling them.

About the $5,000

Sara actually had just $5,000 in her savings when she took a chance on starting her own company. After months of experimenting with her product ideas at home, bouncing ideas off friends, and doing tons of research, she used her $5,000 to design a prototype, find a manufacturer, name and patent the product, marketing her product to potential buyers. She stated, "You don’t have to be rich to move forward with your fabulous new idea."
