The organization was founded in 1986 with the goal to increase the amount of charitable donations to women's programs, which at that time was only at 3 percent. It began with just 30 women and has grown to 11,000 individuals, families, businesses and foundations who offer support to the organization. This has enabled them to award grants and other support to more than 500 organizations who offer programs and services for women and girls.
Grants
Non-profit women entrepreneurs and small business owners may apply for grants if their businesses align with MWFs three primary initiatives:
- Advancing Michigan’s Women’s Agenda
- Developing the Next Generation of Young Women Leaders
- Accelerating Women Entrepreneurs
Microloans
Women entrepreneurs and small business owners may apply for micro loans from $2,500 to $40,000 for small business needs, including start up costs, inventory, equipment, working capital and other business-related costs.
