According to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, sexual harassment is defined as "unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature." Yet hundreds of thousands of women are exposed to this every day in the workplace. But one job tops the list as being the worst for sexual harassment.
And the loser is.....
Waitresses and hostesses at restaurants experience the most sexual harassment on the job. In fact, 90 percent of all waitresses have experienced some type of harassment, according to a recent report by Restaurant Opportunities Centers United in New York. What is even more shocking, besides the 90 percent factor, is that much of the harassment comes from co-workers and managers in restaurants.
Why it is often not reported
Another shocking fact is that many waitresses remain silent about the harassment because they consider it part of the job. The National Restaurant Association, who is supposed to support this industry, seems to ignore the harassment and view allegations as a way for others to belittle the industry. Their statement on this is as follows: "These recycled attacks are part of a national, multi-million dollar campaign engineered, organized and funded by national labor unions and their allies seeking to disparage an industry that has no barrier to entry and no limit to what employees can achieve."
Shocking? You bet! No woman should have to suffer in silence just because she needs her job!
