The news is out; Dell has just released their annual Dell Women Entrepreneur Cities Index. The index lists the top 25 best cities in the world for women to start a business, and 5 U.S. cities are on this year's list. The best city is.....

New York

Yes, New York was ranked by Dell as the No. 1 city for women entrepreneurs to start their own business. The results were announced at the 2016 Global Entrepreneurship Summit. Each year, Dell analyzes communities around the world and evaluates them based on factors that contribute to high potential for female entrepreneurs. This year's Dell research was done in collaboration with the research company IHS and participation from the Technology and Entrepreneurship Center at Harvard.

The study used 5 factors in evaluating the best cities for women entrepreneurs.

  1. Capital - access to capital was high on the list with cities evaluated according to funding provided to female-owned businesses as well as the percentage of funding going to women entrepreneurs.
  2. Culture - support for female entrepreneurs was also important and evaluated on how positive the city's culture is for women entrepreneurs, including support from their legal structure that encourages women to succeed.
  3. Markets - cities that had markets available to women and were favorable regarding policies and costs to reach those markets ranked higher on the Dell list.
  4. Talent - another factor was the availability of female talent to start and grow businesses and the amount of talent available in the labor force in general.
  5. Technology - also important was access to technology and data. 

Other U.S. cities

Other U.S. cities that were on the Dell list included the San Francisco Bay Area, Washington D.C., Seattle, and Austin.
