USDA Announces Funding for Women in STEM Fields

Women and underrepresented minorities from rural areas pursuing and competing a postsecondary degree in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, or mathematics) will be pleased to know there is new funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). The new fund of $400,000 is designed to fund research and extension activities in these fields.

Applications are due April 7, 2016

Eligible applicants have until April 7 to submit grant applications. Research projects eligible include:

  • Projects that contribute to the economic viability of rural communities
  • Initiatives that focus on new and emerging employment opportunities in STEM occupations
  • Promotion of a safe, sufficient, and nutritious food supply for all
  • Projects that build modern workplaces with modern work forces

Who can apply?

Those who are eligible to apply include small businesses, private institutions of higher education, for-profit organizations, non-profit organizations, individuals and private organizations or corporations.

The purpose of the new funding is to encourage the growth of participation by women and underrepresented minorities from rural areas in STEM fields. Funding is available through the Women and Minorities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Fields Program (WAMS).
