Between 1997 and 2013, the number of businesses owned by women in the U.S. grew by 59 percent, according to the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO). Female entrepreneurs generate more than $1.3 trillion in total revenues and are responsible for more than 8.6 million businesses in the U.S.

If you're curious as to where the best cities are for women entrepreneurs, check out this list comprised by NerdWallet, a personal finance website that helps consumers make money decisions. The cities were rated according to the number of women entrepreneurs, wages for women, business friendliness, unemployment rates and education levels.
  1. Washington, D.C. - more than a third of businesses are owned by women
  2. San Francisco, CA - has the highest median annual full-time female earnings
  3. Seattle, WA - 58 percent of its residents holding a bachelor’s degree or higher
  4. Minneapolis, MN - women own almost a third of the city's businesses
  5. Portland, OR - a highly economic and well educated city
  6. Atlanta, GA - one in three businesses are owned by women
  7. Denver, CO - 30 percent of Denver's companies are run by women
  8. Austin, TX - very low unemployment rate at 4.5 percent
  9. San Jose, CA - women own 31 percent of businesses and salaries for working women are high
  10. Boston, MA - high earnings for women and a well educated population
