Even though women either own or manage 30 percent of businesses, they own only 5 percent of the largest organizations, according to a new report released by the United Nations. If nothing changes, the report estimated it would take up to 200 years for women to catch up and establish equality with men.
Women missing in top management positions
The report, completed by the organization’s Bureau for Employers’ Activities, published their results based on information they gathered from 108 countries and from more than 1,200 companies in Africa, the Asia-Pacific region, Eastern and Central Europe and the Latin America-Caribbean regions. The research uncovered a trend that showed “the larger the company, the less likely the head will be a woman.”
U.S. not top-ranking for women in management
Surprisingly, the U.S. was not at the top of the list when it comes to the percentage of women in management positions. In fact, the U.S. ranked 15th. Jamaica ranked number one with 59.3 percent of women who are managers. The U.S. came in at 42.7 percent. Other countries included Asia at 47.6 percent, making it rank fourth globally, and Columbia at 53.1 percent, placing it second globally.
As Deborah France-Massin, the bureau’s director, explained, “there is a long way to go before we achieve true gender equality in the workplace, especially when it comes to top management positions.”
