Eligible women can complete an application online. The grant can be used for tuition, books, child care and other expenses related to attending college or technical school. Women who apply must be enrolled in a college undergraduate degree program or a vocational or technical training program and be the primary wage earner for their family.
The Manassas organization is part of Soroptimist International, an organization of women whose purpose is to help women with challenges and assist them in achieving their goals. The volunteer organization of business and professional women help other women overcome gender discrimation that often prevents them from pursuing their goals. Each community Soroptimist club focuses on the particular needs of the women in their community.
The Women's Opportunity Awards is one of the national grants offered by Soroptimist clubs across the nation. The grants are solely for the purpose of improving education, skills and job opportunities for women. Since 1972, more than $25 million in grants has helped thousands of women improve their education and their lives. Soroptimist International numbers approximately 95,000 in 120 countries.
